What is a Conveyance Allowance?

A Conveyance Allowance is Transport Assistance paid as a contribution towards private vehicle costs incurred by parents/carers who transport their children to and from their Nearest Appropriate School where no ‘Orange’ School Bus is available, or to a pick-up location.

Full terms and conditions of eligibility are set out in the Student Transport Assistance Policy and Operational Guidelines.

Parents/carers of students who attend a Government Education Support School or Centre may choose not to utilise the 'Orange' School Bus and can opt for a Conveyance Allowance in preference to bus transport.

Parents/carers should note the following regarding Conveyance Allowance:

  • Conveyance Allowance does not cover the full cost of owning and operating a personal vehicle. It is a contribution towards the cost of fuel, tyres, repairs, and maintenance.
  • SBS will determine which form of Transport Assistance will be offered to a parent/carer once the online Application for Transport Assistance has been submitted.
  • SBS will determine the approved distance and trips per day that can be claimed.
  • The commencement date from which the Conveyance Allowance is paid is subject to SBS approval. No payment will be made for travel prior to the approved commencement date.
  • Only one Conveyance Allowance will be paid per family of eligible students.
  • A Conveyance Allowance is not paid to a parent/carer who drops their child off at school on their way to work.
  • Students assessed as Complimentary are not entitled to claim Conveyance Allowance.

Can I claim for a student attending kindergarten for half days?

Yes. Students attending kindergarten for half-days may be eligible for a Conveyance Allowance for a return trip at midday.

How much will I be paid?

The payment is calculated by multiplying the number of trips taken during the School Term, the approved kilometres per trip, and the Conveyance Allowance rate. From Term 3, 2024, the conveyance allowance rate is 57.81 cents per kilometre.

What happens if our details or circumstances change?

Changes to student circumstances such as address, school, medical condition or custodial details may affect eligibility for Transport Assistance. Such changes require the parents/carers to submit a new Application for Transport Assistance.

For changes that do not impact eligibility such as updates to primary and emergency contact details or bank details, parents/carers should Update your Details here.

Conveyance Allowance Conditions

  • The parent/carer must provide complete and accurate information on their Application for Transport Assistance and Conveyance Claim Form. Note: Conveyance Allowance claims are auditable. Fraudulent claims will be treated seriously, and the PTA will recoup any overpaid monies.
  • As noted above, parents/carers must submit a new Application for Transport Assistance if the student’s circumstances change.
  • For Mainstream Students to be entitled to a Conveyance Allowance, the student must reside more than 4.5km from their nearest appropriate school and more than 2.5km from the nearest appropriate bus stop, as measured from the home gate of the student’s residence.

Entitlement to a Conveyance Allowance may be withdrawn if:

  • Information provided by a parent/carer on their Application for Transport Assistance or Conveyance Claim Form is false or misleading.
  • A Mainstream Student is travelling to a bus service, and a bus stop is created within 2.5km of the student’s residence.
  • A student has been withdrawn from a bus service due to behavioural issues, and the parent/carer is receiving a Conveyance Allowance to drive the student to a pick-up location.
